Palate
Bold and oily; peat, dark fruit, black pepper and cocoa.
Finish
Long and smoky, with a sweet fruity undertone.
The verdict
The Hercynian Distilling Company (the makers of Elsburn) is in the Harz mountains of Germany. Their "Emperor's Way" series follows the route of the medieval emperors, and this bottle is dedicated to Otto I.
German whisky has come a long way, and this one would hold its own in a blind tasting next to Islay.
